Flyer Workshop: An Introduction to Automata

Class Title: Flyer Workshop: An Introduction to Automata

Date: Saturday, December 1, 2018

Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm with a break for lunch

Instructor: Michael Croft. Learn more about the instructor here.

Class Fee: $45 members / $50 non-members

Class Description: Create your own flyer! In this one-day workshop, participants will be introduced to the mechanics of automata, and learn about the “crank slider” – the principal mechanism that creates the notion of winged-flight. Participants will build a model of the crank slider from foam board, then proceed to mount a figure of their choice to create a flying object with wings.

During the class, participants may choose to make a flying pig (per the example), or they may create any other object, real or imagined, with wings. Flyers can be weird, whimsical, comical or even absurd, and lend themselves well to creative puns (instead of a butterfly, make a stick of butter fly!)

Spend the day in a creative setting- learning about automata, sharing dynamic ideas, and building your own flyer. A tour through the museum’s temporary exhibit, Automata: Miniature Mechanized Narratives is also included.
