Airplane Café, Pat and Noel Thomas, 1992

The Airplane Café is based on a themed café built in 1927 located on US 101 in Los Angeles, California. Many such unusual theme cafes existed along the highways before the advent of the interstate system. This particular miniature was the prototype for a class taught by Pat and Noel Thomas. The types of food advertised on the side of the building an attached billboard reflect the cultural diversity of Los Angeles as early as 1927.
The Thomas’ miniatures are recognized by what miniaturists call “The Thomas Grunge”. They go to great lengths to capture the effects of weather and time on buildings creating specially formulated distressing liquids to age the facades of their buildings. The Harley Davidson Lady is the work of miniature doll artist Marcia Backstrom.
