New Exhibit Captures Tucson’s Iconic Signs in Miniature

TUCSON, AZ — The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures is proud to present Signs of Community: Signage of the Old Pueblo in Miniature, a new exhibition by Tucson-based artist Jorge Ruiz, on view from July 8, 2025 through January 11, 2026.
In his debut museum exhibition, Ruiz, with his unique blend of architectural expertise and binational roots, creates meticulously crafted miniature replicas of Tucson and Nogales’s most cherished storefronts and signs. Each piece, from La Rancherita and Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria to the now-closed Golden Pin Lanes, is a testament to the visual landmarks that define the unique cultural identity of these communities.
“We don’t often stop to contemplate how they have survived for years and even decades, with their visible scars, multiple coats of paint, and amateurish (but ingenious) solutions to structural problems,” Ruiz reflects. “I believe these are extensions of the people that inhabit them, and it tells us a story that is inseparable from the users, as they have both become tangled into one another.”
Raised in Nogales, Ruiz draws on his personal experiences growing up along the U.S.–Mexico border to capture the emotional resonance of everyday architecture. Beginning with photos and detailed sketches, he builds each model using styrene plastic, MDF, brass, aluminum, and custom 3D-printed components, replicating the decay, patchwork repairs, and layered histories embedded in each structure.
His miniatures—some featuring hundreds of hand-inserted bulbs or faded typography—reveal the human presence behind each facade. Through his work, Ruiz transforms urban textures into deeply personal symbols of memory, resilience, and community.
