The Pencil is Mightier: Art on the Tip of a Pencil by Salavat Fidai

February 15, 2024 through June 9, 2024

Exhibit Overview

We are thrilled to welcome internationally acclaimed microsculptor Salavat Fidai back to The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures with the exhibit Salavat Fidai: The Pencil is Mightier, from February 15 – June 9, 2024. Using just a small craft knife and a microscope, Salavat transforms the characters and symbols of larger-than-life global icons – including Game of Thrones, Marvel, and Star Wars – into miniscule sculptures on the tips of pencils. Reducing these vastly recognizable images to the width of a few millimeters, Fidai brings our big-screen obsessions into microscopic focus. Shown alongside sculptures featuring outer space, nature, and everyday objects, his work challenges our perceptions of power and scale – as well as our ideas of what is physically humanly possible.

Salavat Fidai is one of our museum’s most celebrated exhibiting artists and we are honored to have his work in our permanent collection. This expanded exhibition gives our visitors the opportunity to build a deeper understanding and appreciation of his unique and thought-provoking work. Savat Fidai has gained global recognition for his microsculptures on the tips of pencils, with groundbreaking exhibitions around the world, including Australia, Singapore, and the United States. Regarded as the preeminent leader in his field, Fidai has been creating his finely detailed sculptures since 2014, each spanning a mere 2mm to 6mm in width and featuring wide-ranging subject matter, including the Eiffel Tower, Godzilla, and the Iron Throne. Originally from Russia, Salavat and his family emigrated to the United States in 2022, due to their strong opposition of Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine.

Watch Salavat in action during our Artist in the Galleries event on February 17 from 2-4pm.

“My art is a challenge to myself and my capabilities, exploring the limits of human physical capabilities. Can I achieve precision in the depiction, convey its grace, and strive for perfection?” - Salavat Fidai
