The Music of Miniatures: Sidney Weiss Exhibition
May 18, 2026 – August 30, 2026
This spotlight exhibition features miniatures crafted by the virtuoso violinist Sidney Weiss (1928 – 2024), the former concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de L’Opera de Monte Carlo, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as serving as conductor of the Glendale Symphony. An avid woodworker and luthier, Sidney was a master violin and bow maker, regularly performing with his own, highly sought-after violins. Along with his wife, the concert pianist Jeanne Weiss, Sidney traveled extensively and recorded numerous albums as The Weiss Duo, with sold-out performances around the globe. Sidney and Jeanne Weiss were celebrated by their colleagues and friends for their immense talents, but even more so for their kindness, generosity, and intellectual curiosity.
As a personal pastime, Sidney Weiss loved to create miniature objects of art, with a particular passion for miniature replica furniture inspired by works from the J. Paul Getty Center. This exhibition will feature six works gifted to the museum by the Sidney A. Weiss and Jeanne L. Weiss Family Trust, which includes reproductions inspired by the renowned craftsmen Martin Carlin (1730 – 1785) and Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763).
