Exhibit Overview
The Museum is pleased to spotlight local miniature artist, Jorge Ruiz, whose art is deeply rooted in his hometown of Nogales – on both sides of the border. Formally trained as an architect and currently based in Tucson, Jorge’s work celebrates the well-loved and time-worn facades of the buildings and structures of Tucson and Nogales or, as he puts it, “the faces of the city.” With acute attention to detail, he carefully captures the ravages of time, the structural beauty, and the enduring stories that these community landmarks quietly reveal to the viewer.
Tucson is known locally as the “Old Pueblo,” a nickname referencing Tucson’s long history with Spain and Mexico, as well as being the native homeland of multiple indigenous tribes for over 2,000 years. In his first museum exhibition, Signs of Community, Jorge spotlights iconic signage, buildings, and facades of beloved local establishments, including The Loft Cinema, Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria, and Golden Pin Lanes, capturing the signs that make our community feel like home.

Es el placer del Museo destacar al artista y miniaturista Jorge Ruiz, el arte de quien es arraigado en su pueblo natal de Nogales – en ambos lados de la frontera. Entrenado formalmente de arquitecto y actualmente basado en Tucsón, las obras de Jorge celebran las fachadas bien amadas y deterioradas de los edificios y estructuras de Tucsón y Nogales, o como dice él, “las caras de la ciudad”. Con atención aguda para los detalles, cuidadosamente captura los estragos del paso del tiempo, la belleza estructural y los cuentos duraderos de estos monumentos comunitarios silenciosamente revelan al espectador.
Tucsón es conocido localmente como el “Pueblo Viejo”, un sobrenombre que hace referencia a la larga historia de Tucsón con España y México, además de ser parte de las tierras nativas de múltiples tribus indígenas por más de 2.000 años. En su primera exhibición en museo, Señales de comunidad, Jorge centra la atención en señalización, edificios y fachadas icónicas de establecimientos locales y amados tales como el cine The Loft, la pizzería Rocco’s Little Chicago y la bolera Golden Pin Lanes–captando los rótulos que hace que nuestra comunidad se sienta como estar en casa.
Meet the Artist
Based in Tucson, Arizona, and born and raised at the border between Mexico and the US, Jorge Ruiz’s work highlights the stories of people living on the border through their relationships with the buildings they inhabit and the structural objects they interact with on a daily basis. While studying architectural design in school, Jorge began noticing how the signs and buildings of his hometown had become a type of urban memento mori, constantly reminding us of one thing: that the passage of time takes no hostages. These “faces of the city” speak to the collective memories that exist in the subconscious of those who live in the borderland of the “twin cities,” shaping the collective heart of a community that exists as an act of rebellion against time, change, and decay.
Sobre el artista
Con base en Tucsón, Arizona, y nacido y criado en la zona fronteriza entre México y los Estados Unidos, las obras de Jorge Ruiz destacan los cuentos de la gente que reside en la frontera y su relación con los edificios que habita además de los objetos estructurales con los cuales interactúa diariamente. Durante sus estudios del diseño arquitectónico en la universidad, Jorge empezó a darse cuenta de cómo los rótulos en los edificios de su ciudad natal se convirtieron en un tipo de memento mori urbano, recordándonos de una cosa: que el paso del tiempo no perdona a nadie. Estas “caras de la ciudad” hablan de las memorias colectivas que existen en el subconsciente de los residentes de la zona fronteriza de las “ciudades gemelas”, formando el corazón colectivo de una comunidad que existe como un acto de rebelión contra el tiempo, los cambios y el deterioro.
