Title: Tokens of Affection: Miniature Keepsakes
Class Description: Discover the romance of portrait miniatures. These tiny keepsakes were used between the 16th and early 20th centuries to commemorate significant occasions such as a birth, death, marriage, engagement, or even to seal an illicit love affair. Over the centuries, these miniatures were painted on a variety of materials including vellum, parchment, porcelain, ivory, and even thin sheets of cardboard cut from playing cards!
Try your hand at creating small keepsakes with various materials- playing cards, wood plaques, capiz shells, Dresden foil, and other miscellaneous décor. During this class, students will create their own miniature keepsakes and tour the temporary exhibit, The Art & Science of Portrait Miniatures. Students will have the opportunity to use photo transfer techniques and experiment with small-scale painting. This class is designed for all levels. Come experiment with a variety of materials and leave with your own tokens of affection!
